Coes, established in 1928, is the largest independent retailer in East Anglia with seven shops across the East Anglia region. It sells contemporary and traditional menswear. Its Ipswich shop also stocks ladieswear, sportswear and schoolwear.
In 2010/11 Coes arranged for a substantial refit and refurbishment across all three floors at its flagship Ipswich shop. CCTV had been installed for some years, partly as a deterrent against theft, but also to ensure that staffing levels matched customer demand across departments.
The management wanted to upgrade its CCTV and install cameras that would fit aesthetically with the look of the refurbished shop.
STC has been a supplier to Coes for 10 years and were asked to make recommendations. They suggested an upgrade of hardware, including new screens and cameras, but recommended that older cameras be retained as a back-up and for possible use in the future.
STC designed and installed a system whereby staff could view CCTV on two PCs in the offices, which did away with the need for staff and management to be on the shopfloor to gain an impression of levels of activity.
The STC team worked closely with the main building contractor, to ensure that the installation caused minimal disruption to the shop and its customers.
In addition to Ipswich, STC have also fitted CCTV in their other stores in Newmarket, Felixstowe, Dovercourt, King’s Lynn, Lowestoft and Maldon.
Bridget Coe, Director of Coes commented “The installation has given us full CCTV coverage of the building inside and out. STC met all of our criteria and actually went above and beyond the specification, taking care to ensure that equipment on the exterior of the building was painted to blend with the overall look. It was important to us that the equipment and its cabling be unobtrusive.
“Over the years we’ve come to rely on STC for a first class, very professional service. Their approach to customer service is exemplary: the engineers who did the work were fully aware of the environment we’re trying to achieve, and were friendly, accommodating and tidy throughout the installation,” she added.
“But more than that, we feel that we can really trust STC not to sell us equipment that’s not needed. In today’s tough economic climate, that’s very welcome.”
